Retinoids are the group of Vitamin A derivatives that have been proven to stimulate cell renewal, increase collagen production and improve collagen density. The active ingredient of Vitamin A is retinoic acid. Your skin is only able to use retinoids that are—or can be converted to—retinoic acid, because retinoic acid works by binding to retinoic acid receptors found on the outer membrane of cells. This serum contains two powerfully gentle retinoid ingredients, retinaldehyde and retinol. Retinaldehyde needs only one conversion to retinoic acid in the skin. Retinol goes through two conversions, first to retinaldehyde then it is converted to retinoic acid. The retinaldehyde in this formula is time released to ensure maximum stability and absorption while allowing the Vitamin A active to be released gradually into the skin while you sleep for minimal irritation.

We recommend using Squalane + Retinol Night Serum in the evening and choosing a day serum, like our Squalane + Vitamin C Dark Spot Serum or Squalane + Copper Peptide Serum. Be sure to start using a small, pea size quantity of retinol when starting out, even alternating between the nights used. Since our retinol is a powerful serum, we don't recommend layering with other treatment products, but encourage you to layer with other moisturizers and oils.

Im loving it so far! It has a really smooth feeling! In the evenings I switch off between the phyto retinol serum, dark spot serum and the retinol night serum. Then i follow with the omega repair cream. I have no irritation or breakouts from any biossance products!

I've been researching retinol serums to soften pore texture on my cheeks and smile lines, but the Rx versions I've tried in the past are too aggressive for me. I gave this a try because it's one of the few retinol products I've seen recommended for sensitive skin. Since I've started using it, I've been really happy with the difference it's made. The formula is gentle and progressively effective, although I would say the texture is more of a cream than a serum. I started using it 1x a week to see if my skin would react, and now I'm using it up to 3x a week. I also bought the Biossance sheer Zinc sunscreen moisturizer to protect my skin from daytime retinoid photosensitivity, which I also love and deserves its own review. Together they are a great duo!
