In 2003, our scientists began a project that would change the world.
From inside our Berkeley labs, they developed patented technology that allowed us to create an accessible cure for malaria. Today, over 120 million royalty-free treatments have been successfully given thanks to this technology.
Inspired to continue using innovative biotechnology to make a positive impact on the world, we turned to skincare—and the ingredients people put on their faces and bodies every day.
Drawing on our rich history of science and sustainability, we create skincare that is incredibly effective and safe without harming the environment or animals. Because the products you use make a difference for your health and the health of the planet.
Since the 16th century, sharks were hunted for their squalene—an oil in their livers used to make moisturizers and skincare products. Biossance scientists created a renewable, sugarcane-derived version called squalane that saves 2 million of these critical members of the ocean ecosystem every year. This ethical, vegan hydrator is at the heart of every one of our products.
We ban over 2,000 ingredients that are known to be toxic to you and the environment. All of our ingredients are also ethically and sustainably sourced.

We choose tubes and bottles that are completely recyclable, and outer cartons made from renewable sugarcane paper, without inks or dyes that could affect recyclability.
In partnership with CarbonFund.org, we plant trees and fund reforestation efforts to offset every order shipped, saving 22 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each year.
All Biossance formulations are developed in a facility certified by My Green Lab—the gold standard for laboratory sustainability practices for responsible usage of energy, waste, and water.
We collaborate with international organizations like Oceana, Direct Relief, Black Lives Matter, and the Breast Cancer Prevention Partnership to educate on critical environmental, social, and legislative issues and advocate for change.
By July 2020 we’ve donated $413K.
